In the ancient tradition of women everywhere, my life is characterized by adaptability. As John Lennon sang, “life is what happens to you when you’re busy making other plans.” Growing up in North Carolina and planning to be a lawyer (because my mother told me I was great at arguing), I never imagined my eventual reality. In college, I discovered journalism, then after graduation I met this guy. So followed jobs, marriage, moving, new jobs, more moving, children, business, travel. And for the future? Well, que será, será.
In journalism, I worked for United Press International, The News and Observer (Raleigh, N.C.), and Congressional Quarterly. Since moving to Michigan, I have written and edited for diverse publications, large and small. I’ve also been active in the community, volunteering for numerous organizations and serving on non-profit boards.
Possibly my most ambitious project was launching a car sharing operation, the third in the United States, with my neighbor. We were ahead of our time and because life continued to happen and create new opportunities, we closed it after three years, but the relationships and community that arose from it continue to enrich us.
Most recently, I’ve had a fun part-time gig at a local bookstore, where I’m thrilled to share my love of reading with strangers and new friends. I’ve always told people what to read, and at the store, some of them follow my advice! It’s very satisfying.
I’m also thrilled to be combining two passions – writing and wine – as a contributor for the new MichiganUncorked digital magazine. If someone had told me 30 years ago that one could write about wine, I may have ignored the Congress critters and taken an entirely different trajectory in journalism!
A few samples of my writing can be found here.
